Although the town of Carboneras is excluded from the protected area , 80 percent of the municipality is part of the Natural Park Cabo de Gata -Nijar , and is surrounded entirely by nature reserve.
Carboneras has traditionally been a fishing village, and although the economic importance of fishing is still very important , has been transforming its business model towards tourism and industry (the desalination plant of Carboneras is the largest in Europe ) . With a large variety of dining and lodging , Carboneras is chosen by many tourists for overnight or eating , the promenade has a wide variety of restaurants with terraces where to eat or drink while admiring the beaches and the sea. Being urban beaches have all the facilities such as showers , lifeguard station , bins , toilets and bars near the sea.
As for sights or monuments include San Andres Island a few meters from the shore is visible from any beach in the town and is one of the best places in Carboneras to practice snorkeling or diving. The Lightning Tower is the oldest building in the town and date of the Nasrid era , this watchtower was built to guard the coast from attacks by pirates and from the hill on which it is built you have a magnificent view of the Creek Carboneras . Mesa Roldán also belongs to Carboneras , this mountain of volcanic origin, is an ancient volcano cone due to the erosion has flattened the top, is chaired by a lighthouse and a watchtower and offers one of the best views of Cabo de Gata Park .
