Although the town of Carboneras is excluded from the protected area , 80 percent of the municipality is part of the Natural Park Cabo de Gata -Nijar , and is surrounded entirely by nature reserve.
Carboneras has traditionally been a fishing village, and although the economic importance of fishing is still very important , has been transforming its business model towards tourism and industry (the desalination plant of Carboneras is the largest in Europe ) . With a large variety of dining and lodging , Carboneras is chosen by many tourists for overnight or eating , the promenade has a wide variety of restaurants with terraces where to eat or drink while admiring the beaches and the sea. As for sights or monuments include San Andres Island a few meters from the shore is visible from any beach in the town and is one of the best places in Carboneras to practice snorkeling or diving.
